Walls painting and icon painting start with elaborate underpainting. It is aimed at arranging the elements of composition, in other words finding the right place for the image of a saint or several saints on a wood panel or a wall. When it comes to evangelic or biblical scenes, then it’s necessary to situate the landscape scene and architecture. The image of the Saint is sufficiently detailed during the process. The details are especially important if we have to do with the newly canonized saints, whose photos and picturesque portraits have survived to this day. When underpainting is finished, the technique of gilding is used (if applicable). After that we begin painting the image.
